UBC Botany warmly congratulates Dr. Sean Michaletz, Assistant Professor in our unit, who was recently announced as the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) 2022 Global Environmental Change Early Career Award recipient. AGU, a nonprofit organization that supports 130,000 enthusiasts to experts worldwide in Earth and space sciences, annually recognizes a select number of individuals as part of its Honors and Recognition program.

Michaletz’s award is a hugely well-deserved recognition by the global Earth and space sciences community for his outstanding research contributions in the area of global environmental change, all within 10 years of receiving his Ph.D.

The AGU Global Environment Change section honored Michaletz for his research on the physical processes linking environmental variation to plant physiology, and how this “scales up” to influence higher levels of biological organization. To investigate these topics, he and his group use interdisciplinary approaches that draw upon fields such as physics, chemistry, engineering, and geoscience.

His work often involves development of mechanistic theory and models, which are parameterized, tested, and refined using data from the laboratory and the field. Michaletz also focuses on long-term monitoring of climate, ecophysiology, and vegetation dynamics at a growing network of sites located around the world.

“I am thrilled to receive the 2022 AGU Global Environmental Change Early Career Award. Many thanks to my mentors, collaborators, and research group for all of their support over the years. I also thank my nominators and the selection committee for recognizing my work in this way,” said Michaletz.

AGU will formally recognize this year’s recipients during the #AGU22 Fall Meeting, 12-16 December 2022 in Chicago, IL and online everywhere. This celebration is a chance for AGU’s community to recognize the outstanding work of our colleagues and be inspired by their accomplishments and stories.

AGU advances discovery and solution science that accelerate knowledge and create solutions that are ethical, unbiased and respectful of communities and their values. Their programs include serving as a scholarly publisher, convening virtual and in-person events and providing career support.
