Description

Abstract: While hybridization is traditionally thought to counteract diversification, it can sometimes facilitate rapid adaptive radiations by instantly generating large genetic variation. I will show evidence for a positive role of hybridization in the adaptive radiations of African cichlid fishes and neotropical butterflies. Lastly, I will discuss under which circumstances we would expect hybridization to facilitate adaptive radiation.
