Abstract: The ability to detect and regulate changes in pH is critical for all forms of life, and is of increasing importance for reef-building corals experiencing ocean warming and acidification due to climate change. In this talk I will discuss our work investigating how seawater pH dynamics and internal pH regulation pathways affect coral resilience to climate change stressors across biological scales, from the pH-dependence of coral sperm motility and symbiont photosynthesis to the effect of pH on colony metabolism and fitness. These studies will help determine the capacity of corals to acclimate and adapt to the ongoing climate crisis.
